HISTORY OF IGUMMA

Igbo Association of Memphis Metro Area (IGUMMA), Memphis, TN is a 501c organization which brings together a group of persons who are Igbo by birth, marriage, naturalization, or adoption within the Memphis Metro Area. Membership also extends to persons of Igbo descent and their families living in the surrounding states of Arkansas and Mississippi as defined in our constitution.

To promote a sense of belonging for the Igbos living in Memphis, TN, a group of Igbos initiated an attempt to have a formalized organization where all persons of Igbo descent and their families can interact while promoting our culture. In 2003, IGUMMA was formed. The organization creates and promotes cultural, educational, and social programs for its members and other interested persons. Through its activities, IGUMMA strives to preserve the rich Igbo culture and traditions. Our constitution is the framework for self-governance for our organization in accordance with our purpose. It permits the organization to discharge its duties and functions. The Bylaws provide the required legal structure and guidelines for its operation, activities, membership rights and responsibilities.

The purpose and objectives of the organization are:

• To foster unity and create cultural awareness among the Igbos living in Memphis Metro Area.
• To celebrate our rich cultural heritage.
• To educate and empower our children about their cultural heritage.
• To promote social interaction among ourselves.
• To promote civic responsibility among its members.
• To participate in outreach events that will impact positively the lives of people living within our community.

In 2011, IGUMMA became a fully registered Non-Profit organization in the State of Tennessee. IGUMMA continues to promote our rich Igbo culture while fostering unity among Igbos in Memphis Metro Area
